The Patient Support Program is replacing the MEDIC Replacement Program.
The Patient Support Program allows friends, family, and community members to donate their MEDIC membership credit to a patient receiving blood. These credits are used to help offset the hospital’s blood processing fees.
How it works
Family and friends may host a blood drive for the patient receiving blood to receive credits. MEDIC staff will plan the logistics of the drive. More than one drive may be held for an individual. Once the drive(s) is complete, MEDIC staff will process the donations and add the credits to the patient’s account.
Things to note:
- Blood donors MUST notify MEDIC staff they are donating for the patient.
- Patient support donations can be made at any mobile drive or any of MEDIC’s Donor Centers.
What is a credit?
A credit is a monetary coverage of $15 to help cover a hospital’s blood processing fee per unit of blood. MEDIC does not cover hospital charges or blood product fees. If a MEDIC member or patient receiving credits receives blood in a hospital, it is the patient’s or family’s responsibility to notify MEDIC of the blood usage. If a patient uses blood from a hospital in MEDIC’s service area, MEDIC staff will contact the hospital for usage information. Once this information is confirmed, the patient will receive a check for $15 per credit in their MEDIC account. If the patient uses blood in a hospital outside MEDIC’s service area, the patient or the patient’s family MUST provide an itemized copy of the patient’s hospital bill showing the blood products used before a check can be issued. Then, the patient will receive $15 for each credit.
