PART – TIME POSITION – SECOND SHIFT

Responsible for monitoring the storage of blood components and for distribution of blood components. Represent MEDIC in a professional manner that enhances the relationship with hospital blood bank personnel. Work under the supervision of Director-Technical Services, Laboratory Supervisor, Group Leader or Technologist. Assure the established standards of quality are upheld.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct shipping container checks at prescribed intervals.
• Review blood components storage temperature records at hospital transfusion services.
• Report any problems or potential problems to the Director-Technical Services or Laboratory Supervisor.
• Organize and rotate blood component inventory.
• Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
• Report existing or potential maintenance requirements.
• Review blood component storage records for completeness and acceptability.
• Report any problems or potential problems to the Director, Technical Services or Laboratory Supervisor.
• Coordinate with Hospital Transfusion Service Staff to determine if they have short expiration date units not to be returned at this time. Generate a Blood Held form for these units.
• Remove from storage blood components to be returned and generate a Transfer Memo. Have Transfusion Services Staff review for accuracy and sign declaration of proper storage.
• Conduct shipping container check for fresh blood components.
• Place fresh blood components in proper storage as directed by Hospital Transfusion Services Staff.
• Report any problems or potential problems to the Director, Technical Services or Laboratory Supervisor.
• Receive requests from hospital transfusion services for routine and special blood components.
• Follow established protocol to fulfill these requests, including quality control and visual inspection to determine the suitability of blood component for issue.
• Operate the computerized invoicing and billing system and pack blood components for shipment.
• Drive MEDIC vehicle to deliver shipments, pick up returns, and pick up freshly collected blood at mobile collection sites.
• Run errands for MEDIC staff as required.
• Report any problems with MEDIC vehicles. Monitor services requirements for vehicles and take vehicles to designated facilities for routine maintenance and/or repairs.
• Monitor the temperature of the blood storage units.
• Respond promptly to any alarm situation. Document response to alarm situation.
• Compare Rees Temperature Monitoring System readings to digital reading. Initial the Blood Storage Unit Daily QC to document this comparison and indicate status. Verify that an Alarm Report has been generated for each event listed on the Event Report. Run any missing Alarm Reports
• Develop an effective relationship with the Metro area hospitals Transfusion Service personnel. Assist with inventory or temperature problems as requested.
• Serves as MEDIC liaison with out of area Hospital Transfusion Services Personnel, developing and demonstrating a positive relationship and reporting any problems or potential problems.
• Answer distribution phone and direct calls.
• Generate neat and accurate records.
• Receive incoming supplies by helping unload trucks and moving supplies to designated storage areas.
• Adheres to MEDIC’s Customer Service Policy.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:
Valid driver’s license with good driving record required. Health services or science background with basic knowledge of blood product storage and handling desirable.
