Zoo Knoxville and MEDIC Regional Blood Center are teaming up to gather lifesaving blood and help support the zoo’s mission all month. Normally, donors would receive a free t-shirt after their donation. This month, though, MEDIC is letting people choose to opt out of the free t-shirt and donate the cost of it directly to the zoo to support programs like the Tiger Forest. Last year, the partnership boosted blood donations and raised nearly $5,000 for the zoo. MEDIC said these events are helpful because it’s typically more difficult for them to collect blood for local hospital in July and summer months. During the entire month of November, your life-saving blood donation can go even further! When you donate blood at any location and skip the free T-Shirt, MEDIC Regional Blood Center will make a donation to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is a 152-bed hospital certified by the state of Tennessee as the only Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center in East Tennessee and is accredited by the Joint Commission. As a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center, Children’s Hospital offers full capabilities to care for seriously ill children in a unique pediatric environment and offers the services of many different pediatric subspecialties. Children’s Hospital works jointly with the University of Tennessee Medical Center to ensure that injured children in this region receive trauma care at the institution most appropriate for the child’s needs. They also assist smaller hospitals by providing pediatric health care training opportunities. ETCH has been a great partner to MEDIC and we are so grateful to be able to give back to them!

The VOLS have been winning this blood competition each year since 2009! This year, MEDIC is hoping to win on and off the field. To do that, hundreds of donors will need to roll up their sleeves and donate blood at one of our community blood drives.

MEDIC Regional Blood Center is teaming up with Zoo Knoxville in a unique partnership to help further the mission of both organizations. Zoo Knoxville is encouraging donors to give lifesaving blood with MEDIC during the month of July. The summer months are traditionally some of the most difficult for MEDIC. During their donation, blood donors can also help the zoo’s vital conservation programs. Typically, every blood donor receives a MEDIC t-shirt when giving blood, but in July, for every donor who opts not to take a blood-drive t-shirt, MEDIC will donate the cost of the shirt to the zoo. The money will go to help support programs like Zoo Knoxville’s world-renowned red panda breeding program and the first Western lowland gorillas ever born in Knoxville. To kick-off the month-long push, MEDIC and Zoo Knoxville will offer a free admission ticket to Zoo Knoxville for anyone who donates blood at any of MEDIC’s area locations on Friday, July 8th. Donors can give blood at any of the following locations on Friday, July 8th:

MEDIC Knoxville Donor Center – 1601 Ailor Avenue, 8:00am-6:30pm

MEDIC Farragut Donor Center – 11000 Kingston Pike, 6:30am-6:00pm

MEDIC Regional Blood Center is preparing to host hundreds of donors at its 12th Annual Parrot Head Party on Thursday, May 26th at its Knoxville Donor Center, 1601 Ailor Avenue, from 8:00am-6:00pm. The event helps MEDIC prepare for Memorial Day weekend and upcoming summer months when blood donations typically decline. “The need for blood never takes a vacation,” said MEDIC spokesperson Benjamin Prijatel. “Our Parrot Head Party is a crucial event because it helps ensure we’ll be able to meet the needs of patients at our local hospitals.” This year’s event is expected to see record attendance thanks to some special incentives provided by local businesses. This year, all donors will be entered to win the Ultimate Parrot Head Experience which includes two tickets to Jimmy Buffett’s June 2nd concert in Atlanta, hotel accommodations, and a $50 gas card. Raffles will also be held for a gift basket from Zoo Knoxville, tickets to see the Tennessee Smokies, and gift cards to Margaritaville restaurant in Pigeon Forge. Additionally, all donors will be treated to a cheeseburger lunch courtesy of the Smoky Mountain Parrot Head Club; a limited edition Parrot Head t-shirt; and coupons for a free Chick-fil-A Sandwich, free Rita’s Italian Ice, and a free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse. MEDIC Regional Blood Center is teaming up with Food City, Star 102.1, and WATE 6 On Your Side to encourage those in East Tennessee to roll up their sleeves and give lifesaving blood. Roll Up Your Sleeve week is hosted every January at a time when blood inventory tends to be low. This year, MEDIC’s inventory is near critical levels. Everyone is asked to donate blood regardless of their blood type. Food City is hosting MEDIC at 21 of their East Tennessee area stores across 13 counties. To help encourage people to donate blood, one person at each Food City hosted blood drive will win a $50 Food City gift card. At the end of the week, every blood donor will be entered into another drawing for a $500 Food City gift card. Additionally, each person who donates blood will receive a MEDIC Roll Up Your Sleeve t-shirt and a coupon for a free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse. “Right now we don’t have the blood supply we need,” said MEDIC spokesperson Benjamin Prijatel. “If you’re a regular blood donor, please come in and donate. If you can’t give blood but want to help, please encourage your friends, family, and co-workers to participate. “ In addition to the locations at Food City stores, WATE 6 On Your Side is also hosting a MEDIC blood drive. One donor who gives blood there will also win a $50 Food City gift card. Below is a list of all of the Roll Up Your Sleeve blood dri
